9:51 am - Hair salon open Sunday morning?

kalabaw
Hi everyone! I'm going to be a bridesmaid in a wedding next Sunday and would like to get my hair done that morning (wedding is at noon). Any recommendations? I'm not from SB and looked through yelp, but none of the salons listed are open on Sundays!

1:05 pm - eyeballs

brittlepoetry
I would like a recommendation for a local optometrist in Goleta or Santa Barbara. For several years I've been driving to my hometown - two and a half hours away - to see my optometrist of 15+ years, but it's too big of a hassle now that I'm an 8 to 5 girl. A name and a brief statement of why you like, or dislike, a local optometrist would be most fabulous. Thanks!

8:45 am - Mechanic Recommendations

andystarr
I was wondering if anyone could recommend a good, honest mechanic. I just moved here not even a week ago when the "check engine soon" light popped on last night. In San Diego, I could always rely on my mechanic to be honest and give me a fair price. Open on the weekends is a plus as my boyfriend will be up this weekend and could pick me up from the mechanic. Thanks!

1:13 pm - Halloween!
maistyle As along as there isn't any fires, I'm going there for the Halloween weekend.

I heard there is a big party/festival going on that holiday, I was wonder where I can find info on it? Where it is and things like that so I can book a hotel room close by.

I'm excited to go and I never been to something like this before.

Thanks in advance!

9:55 pm - Pretty kitties?

art_wank_diva
Where around town can I find large statues of lions or other big cats?

No, I am not looking to buy these, so it's totally fine if they are firmly attached to the ground.

12:37 pm - Amtrak to L.A. area

rms10
Have any of you used Amtrak to go to the L.A. area from here? If so, how closely did it stick to the schedule? (I used to live in Ann Arbor, and the train on the Chicago-Detroit route was regularly running 1-2 hours late.) I'd be traveling on a Wednesday afternoon.

Thanks!

5:01 pm - Housing

kautta

On craigslist I'm occasionally seeing two different prices for an apartment: one for a single person, another one for a couple. The latter is usually somewhat more expensive, including the extra utilities and supposed extra wear-n-tear on the building.

What is the range typically? How much more do you think is cool to pay for a couple versus single person?

I'm doing a collage project and looking for old magazines to cut up for images. Any ideas where I could find them, ideally for free? Travel, health, wellness, action sports, yoga, etc.

9:17 pm - Latest Jesusita fire info

beepbeep
One of my very best friends has had to evacuate her home :(

It is still worth going north if you need relief from heat/smoke/dryness...for my fellow lung-challenged folks.  Santa Maria 58 degrees 90% humidity fog.  Santa Barbara 75 degrees 39% humidity smoky air.

Latest news:

*Excellent summary of available info -- EdHat, Twitter, Independent, other media sources etc. from Doc Searls  *

In addition,  SB County now has a page up on the fire.

I will be part of the Twitter brigade for as long as I can tonight, passing on the latest updates in the hope of helping those affected.

I would invite folks who needed to do so to crash here but despite what the news says, there is flu in SB county because I have it!  I don't know what KIND of flu because no one has tested me but it's been horrible and no one needs it on top of an evacuation...

Back to the fire.  Latest: 2000 homes threatened, 1000 evacuated.  There are road and school closures and shelters have been set up.  There are places to evacuate animals.  If you are in the Santa Barbara area please stay informed for your safety.
